C.
Joe Sayas, Jr., Esq.
C. Joe Sayas, Jr.,
Esq. is an experienced consumer rights attorney helping insurance
policyholders, employees, persons injured by the negligence of
others and those harmed by the unfair business practices of big
companies.
Mr. Sayas has obtained numerous multimillion recoveries for his
clients. He was instrumental in obtaining over $5 million for
families from their insurance companies for the bad faith handling
of their water and mold damage claims. In a highly disputed auto
accident case, his efforts led to a family's recovery of $4.6
million against the defendants. He fought for a disabled senior
citizen who fell while getting off a van operated by a company
providing transportation services to the disabled . Despite the
claimed assistance by the driver, Mr. Sayas established that the
company failed to provide the care required by her disability,
resulting in the recovery of $1 million and changes in the company’s
practices.
Mr. Sayas won an appeal against a major insurance company that
refused to provide earthquake benefits based on unenforceable policy
exclusions. Victims of the Northridge earthquake benefitted from the
pro consumer appellate decision. Mr. Sayas also won one of the
largest recoveries ever paid to a homeowner by a California
municipality for destruction caused by raw sewage. He was featured
on the cover of Los Angeles Daily Journal's Verdicts and Settlements
in recognition of his accomplishments.
Mr. Sayas has litigated complex multiparty and class action cases.
He obtained court relief for families misled into buying life
insurance policies with the false promise of stopping premium
payments after a fixed number of years. He has obtained recoveries
for retirees induced into buying complicated annuity policies with
high but undisclosed surrender charges.
As current class counsel to thousands
of employees, Mr. Sayas is pursuing their wage claims for overtime
and missed breaks. He is also class counsel seeking court remedies
for retirees and seniors who bought annuities touted as investments
by insurance agents. These insurance products were sold without
disclosures that the high sales commissions were recouped by the
company from the policyholders’ earnings.
In the early days of his career, Mr. Sayas distinguished himself by
arguing the case of the Philippine government against Ferdinand and
Imelda Marcos, leading to the issuance of an injunction against the
Marcoses. Before establishing his own firm, he was a litigation
attorney for Alexander, Millner and McGee, the largest
minority-owned firm in the country in the 1990s.
Mr. Sayas received his Master of Laws from Georgetown University Law
Center and his Bachelor of Laws from the University of the
Philippines. He is a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum -
a trial lawyer organization whose membership is limited to those who
have demonstrated exceptional skills, experience and excellence in
advocacy by achieving a verdict or settlement of one million dollars
or more. He
volunteers his time serving as the Corporate Secretary of the Board
of Directors of the Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA), a
non-profit organization serving impoverished and multi-ethnic
neighborhoods in Los Angeles.
